Four metrics to report when organic traffic falls
When organic sessions fall, these four numbers separate a real problem from a shift in how people arrive.
The problem with sessions
A session count treats an informational visit and a purchase-intent visit as the same event. AI Overviews appear far more often on the first than the second. Seer Interactive found them on 36% of informational queries, against 8% of commercial and 5% of transactional ones (April 2026, 5.47 million tracked queries). Where one appears, fewer people click. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page on keywords with an AI Overview (December 2025 data). Reported as one number, a shift in the mix looks like decline.
One: impressions on commercial queries
Filter Search Console to queries containing purchase intent and watch impressions rather than clicks. If impressions hold, you are still in the consideration set and the change is in how people click. If impressions fall, you have a real problem.
Two: click-through rate split by intent
Split queries into informational and commercial and track each against its own history. Expect informational CTR to fall most where AI Overviews appear. Commercial CTR has softened too. Seer Interactive's 2026 update found it declined through 2025 on queries that showed no AI Overview at all. So a commercial dip is not a warning on its own. Check it against your rankings. If positions held, the change is in the results page. If positions fell, it is yours to fix.
Three: presence in AI answers
Pick the twenty questions that matter most commercially and check monthly whether your brand appears in AI Overviews and assistant answers, and whether a competitor appears instead. Do it by hand if you have no tool. Twenty checks a month is an hour. Search Console folds AI Overviews and AI Mode into its normal Web totals without separating them, so a manual check is the clearest view you have.
Four: conversion rate per session
If the visits you lost were mostly informational, conversion rate per session should rise as they fall away. Reported alongside falling sessions, it shows whether the traffic you kept is worth more.
Say it before it happens
The difference between a routine update and a crisis meeting is usually whether anyone warned the board that sessions would fall and explained why. Set the expectation early and report these four numbers from the first month. Our journal piece Traffic fell, leads rose covers that conversation.
